Unable to view SharePoint nodes in Server Explorer

Hello,

Using Visual Studio 2012, I right-click on SharePoint Connections in Server Explorer and select "Add Connection..."  My SharePoint 2013 site is on the same machine, so I enter http://localhost.  (I've also tried the actual machine name, http://sp2013dev.)  The connection is created with the root site at the top and all the nodes underneath (ContentTypes, Features, etc.).  Some of the nodes I can expand (e.g. List Templates expands to show different List Template types; Lists and Libraries expands to show Document Libraries and Lists).  But then when I try to expand further, I get an error message that states the following:

Unable to retrieve information for this node, possibly because the node has been deleted or its connection disrupted.  If the item exists in SharePoint, be sure it is accessible

I have not found any information about this error, and I've exhausted all attempts to permissions above what I've already created.
