how to accept user's input in a view/or otherwise filter the view based on the user's input?

I need to take an user's input for a field in a view and then filter the view based on the user's response. How do I do such a thing in Sharepoint 2007? I can create a view with the fields and then filter out the view based on the user's response in a variable.
