Calendar Overlay: how to open in modal mode instead of new window?

Hi all,

This is a well-known issue that is best described on David Lozzi's blog (http://davidlozzi.com/2013/02/06/calendar-overlays-keeping-events-in-the-same-window/ ).

However, my understanding is that this method only works with SP2010, not SP2013, essentially because the SP.UI.ApplicationPages.CalendarNotify client method no longer exists in SP2013.

Is there another method that we can hook into to make this work? It's clearly pretty annoying to see all events open in a new tab, instead of the current window (or better in a modal dialog).
